PIERRE, S.D. – Mid-America Regulatory Conference leaders elected South Dakota Public Utilities Commissioner Gary Hanson to serve a second term as the association’s secretary at their annual meeting last month in Chicago. MARC is a regional organization comprised of utility and energy regulatory agencies from 14 states that include Arkansas, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin.
Since its formation in 1956, MARC has hosted an annual event to give attendees an opportunity to share ideas and discuss regulatory and policy issues impacting their states, region and the nation as a whole.
Hanson is in his third term on the South Dakota PUC and currently serves as the commission’s vice chairman. Since 2002, he has led the commission as its chairman five times. Hanson also represents South Dakota on the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners’ Committee on Electricity. He served on the executive committee and as treasurer of the Organization of MISO States, represented the nation’s NARUC commissioners on the steering committee of the National Wind Coordinating Collaborative and is a member of the Advisory Council for New Mexico State University’s Center for Public Utilities.
Hanson’s history of public service extends beyond his time at the PUC. A native of Sioux Falls, he was twice elected as mayor of that city and oversaw multiple departmental operations. Prior to serving as mayor, Hanson was Sioux Falls' utilities commissioner for seven years and was responsible for the development and day-to-day activities for three municipal utilities.
