South Dakota Public Utilities Commission heads to Freeman to discuss wind power and cell phones

The South Dakota PUC will be holding a public meeting in Freeman on Monday, November 29, 2004, to discuss issues such as wind development and cell phone coverage.  Commissioners Bob Sahr, Gary Hanson, and Jim Burg, along with PUC staff, Ryan Pidde with Governor's Office of Economic Development and local cellular provider representatives are expected to attend.

"The folks from Freeman extended an invitation for the PUC to come and talk with them about wind development issues, and we decided to visit the cell phone topic as well," Chairman Bob Sahr commented.

"Freeman has always been a progressive community, and we'd like to visit with them about their concerns regarding better service," offered Vice Chairman Gary Hanson.  "We have all become more dependent on mobile services for emergency services.  And cell phones most assuredly enhance a community's economic development options."

The meeting will enable the South Dakota PUC Commissioners to discuss the wind development potential in the Freeman area as well as gather information regarding the availability of wireless coverage.

As far as wind development goes, Commissioner Jim Burg feels the Freeman area is prime real estate for development.  "It's imperative that we educate landowners," believes Burg.

For additional information on the Freeman meeting, please feel free to contact the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission at 1-800-332-1782.  The public is encouraged to attend.
