Crazy Horse Memorial Volksmarch, all day Sunday, June 5
Optional pre-conference activity. Additional fee applies.
Crazy Horse Volksmarch registrants briefing
MARC attendees may take advantage of this unique opportunity to hike up the world's largest mountain carving in progress, Crazy Horse Memorial. Sculpted from Black Hills granite, the carving depicts the Lakota warrior Crazy Horse seated on his horse. Volksmarchers make a 10K (6.2-mile) round-trip hike up the carving where they can stand on Crazy Horse's outstretched arm and view the expansive Black Hills. Afterward, participants can take in the visitor facilities at Crazy Horse Memorial including the Indian Museum of North America and Korzack's Studio and Home.
The hike can be strenuous and takes place on hilly, rough terrain with some steep inclines. It is not suitable for strollers. Sturdy footwear is required.
MARC meeting attendees and their guests may participate in the Crazy Horse Memorial Volksmarch. This is an all-day activity, with breakfast available at 6:30 a.m. and arrival back at the Ramkota scheduled for approximately 3:30 p.m. The hike itself will take between two and four hours.
Folks who pre-register for this event will receive breakfast Sunday at the Ramkota, transportation to/from Crazy Horse Memorial (approximately 40 minutes, one way), snacks and drinks for the hike and lunch at Chute Roosters in Hill City. Fee is $30 per person if registered by May 5; $45 if registered between May 6 and 19. Registration will not be accepted after May 19.
We'll be exploring the Black Hills in comfortable motorcoaches for our off-site MARC 2011 activities. The routes occur over and around mountains with elevations up to 5,700 feet. The pace is leisurely and the view is picturesque. See the driving routes and map.
See for yourself.
