SOUTH DAKOTA WIND ENERGY CONFERENCE:
OPPORTUNITIES AND BARRIERS

Conference Purpose: To highlight current South Dakota and regional work on wind resource assessment, project development, wind products and markets, and transmission issues from the perspectives of business, government and non-profit sector stakeholders; to identify opportunities and barriers; to create consensus on realistic actions that encourage wind development; and to improve long-term working relationships among key stakeholders.
Conference Format: A discussion format will be used. Topics will be introduced by the session moderator and expert panelists will briefly provide responses. The audience will be encouraged to ask questions and offer comments.

10:30-11:45 a.m. Session 1: Wind Resources, Technology and Costs

Session 1 Content: What is the best information available about South Dakota wind resources? What is the total potential in the state and nation? What do NREL wind resource maps for South Dakota show? What are the basic facts about wind technologies and costs? What are the characteristics of modern wind turbines? What do turbines and wind farms cost? This panel will discuss both small and large operations as well as the national issues facing wind development.

12:30-2:30 p.m. Session 2: Wind Transmission and System Integration

Note: U. S. Senator Tim Johnson will address the audience during this time.
Session 2 Content: What transmission is available to move South Dakota wind to market? What about transmission capacity, interconnection and service tariffs? What roles are played by current and future power supply contracts? How can wind be integrated with other generation resources, such as coal and hydro?
